Methyl Salicylate is used as rubefacient and counter-irritant (local analgesic) for musculo-skeletal pain. It has similar actions, uses and adverse effects similar to aspirin but not used systemically. it is applied to skin in the form of a liniment, ointment or cream; care should be exercised as since salicylte is absorbed through the skin.
Indications
Methyl Salicylate is primarily indicated in conditions like Musculoskeletal disorders, Peripheral vascular disease, Respiratory tract infections, Soft tissue disorders.
Contraindication
Methyl Salicylate is contraindicated in conditions like Haemophilia,Pregnancy,Lactation,Gastrointestinal hemorrhage.
Side Effects
The symptomatic adverse reactions produced by Methyl Salicylate are more or less tolerable and if they become severe, they can be treated symptomatically, these include Irritative skin reactions, Skin ulcers, Stinging of skin.
Warnings
Methyl salisylate should be used with caution in patients with any pre-existing illness or any allergy especially to aspirin or aspirin-like products. This should be used only if clearly needed during pregnancy or lactation.
High Risk Groups
Drug should not be given to Paediatrics, Pregnant Mothers, and Neonates.If prescribing authority justifies the benefits of the drug against the possible damages he/she should reevaluate them and consult the reference material and previous studies.
