Memantine (HCl) is a derivative of amantadine. Similar to amantadine, it inhibits enzyme N-methyl-D-aspartate receptors, that affects glutamate transmission. Memantine (HCl) is used in the treatment of mild to moderate dementia in Alzheimer"s disease. Memantine (HCl) is also used in the management of Parkinsonism and cerebral spasticity.
Indications
Memantine is primarily indicated in conditions like Alzheimer's disease, Induction and maintenance of anaesthesia, Parkinsonism.
Contraindication
Memantine is contraindicated in conditions like Breast feeding.
Side Effects
The symptomatic adverse reactions produced by Memantine are more or less tolerable and if they become severe, they can be treated symptomatically, these include Dizziness, Tiredness, Headache, Vomiting, Anxiety, Confusion, Hallucination, Cystitis, Hypertonia.
Warnings
Memantine (HCl) should be used with caution in patients with renal impairment (avoid if severe); pregnancy; epilepsy.
High Risk Groups
Drug should not be given to Pregnant Mothers, and patients suffering from Kidney dysfunction.If prescribing authority justifies the benefits of the drug against the possible damages he/she should reevaluate them and consult the reference material and previous studies.
