About Adenosine

Adenosine is a purine nucleoside, adenine linked by its N9 nitrogen to the C1 carbon of ribose. It occurs naturally throughout the body. Adenosine is a component of ribonucleic acid and its nucleotide play major roles in the reaction and regulation of of metabolism. Adenosine is used as an anti-arrhythmic agent. Adenosine is less effective in the presence of it receptor blockers such as theophylline or caffiene and its effects are potentiated by it uptake inhibitors such as dipyramidole.

Indications

Adenosine is primarily indicated in conditions like Coronary artery disease diagnosis, Long term management of hereditary angioedema, Paroxysmal supraventricular tachycardia, Rapid reversion to sinus ryhthm, Severe pain and tenderness in benign fibrocystic breast disease, Tachycardias diagnosis, Tobacco amblyopia and leber's optic atrophy.

Contraindication

Adenosine is contraindicated in conditions like Asthma,Sick sinus syndrome,Atrioventricular block.

Side Effects

The severe or irreversible adverse effects of Adenosine, which give rise to further complications include Hypotension, Bronchospasm.Adenosine produces potentially life-threatening effects which include Respiratory Failure, Heart block, Atrial fibrillation, Transient arrhythmias, Sinus arrhythmia. which are responsible for the discontinuation of Adenosine therapy.The signs and symptoms that are produced after the acute overdosage of Adenosine include Tachycardia.The symptomatic adverse reactions produced by Adenosine are more or less tolerable and if they become severe, they can be treated symptomatically, these include Dizziness, Headache, Nausea, Vomiting, Dyspnea, Facial flushing, Syncope, Chest pain, Paresthesias.

Warnings

Avoid use of adenosine in patients with 2nd or 3rd degree heart block, sick sinus syndrome. Used with caution in patients with obstructive pulmonary disease. Intravenous infusion of adenosine should be used with caution in patients who may develop hypotensive complications, such as those with autonomic dysfunction or stenotic valvular heart disease.

High Risk Groups

Drug should not be given to Pregnant Mothers, Geriatrics, and Neonates.If prescribing authority justifies the benefits of the drug against the possible damages he/she should reevaluate them and consult the reference material and previous studies.

Note: Given by rapid IV bolus, If tachycardia not abolished in 1-2 min, administer a 12 mg dose(may be repeated once).

Dose 0.022 to 0.037 mg/Kg
